Many people think sororities are all about social events. Some even call sororities a way to "rent-a-friend." But this is very far from the truth. Sororities offer so much more than social events. Greek life gives you a community of people.
One of the most important things to me being in a sorority is the community service. Theta's philanthropy is CASA (Court Appointed Special Advocate) but, Theta also promotes community service all around Lubbock. Each semester we are required to participate in community service. I have truly enjoyed this requirement for the past 3 semesters. I have had the opportunity to give back to the Lubbock community and do it while bonding with my Theta sisters. Sororities make a difference in the community by giving back. This past Halloween Greek life put on a trick or treating event for the surrounding neighborhoods. Greek circle was blocked off to all cars for 2 hours to allow families to trick-or-treat. Each sorority and fraternity house had a table set up to hand out candy to young kids. This was such a great opportunity for us to show our neighbors Greek life is more than just partying and drinking.
Sororities/Greek life allow you to meet more people quicker than you normally would. Another advantage to being in a sorority is the number of people you meet. The pictures below and the pictures I have posted only show other Theta's but, I have been able to meet people and become friends with someone in almost every sorority on Greek Circle. I get to meet girls who are like me and who aren't like me. I’ve had the opportunity to invest in other relationships and grow friendships because I am part of a sorority. I have loved attending other sororities philanthropy events and being able to give back to more than just CASA. The Greek community at Tech is small close-knit. We all support each other in times of need and in success. The Texas Tech Panhellenic Board does a great job unifying the 12 sororities on campus and providing events to get to know one another.
Greek life is truly more than just date parties, formals, semis, social events. Greek life provides connections that may help you find a job, supports your strengths, gets you involved on campus and in the community and it can financially help you through school with scholarships. Greek life has so much more to offer than people realize. I have included pictures below from non-Theta events that I’ve done with my Theta sisters. Each of these pictures is important to me.
I celebrated a "family" Christmas with my Big and Little Sis’. We try to have monthly dinners to catch up and support each other when school and life are overwhelming. I am fortunate to have these two beautiful girls to love on and invest in.
The second picture is tailgating my freshman year. Madelyn, the girl on my right, was my first friend at Tech, she is a RHIM major and Theta with me. The other girls are friends of mine from high school. This picture was taken at Pi Kappa Alpha's (PIKE) tailgate. We bonded over many Pike tailgates and lodge parties.
The third picture is of my first date party. Our theme was Dynamic Duo. We teamed up with Chi Omega and Alpha Phi to host this date party. It was so fun to have 3 sororities under one roof having fun and getting to know each other. Madelyn went has an angel and her date was a cow to make..... HOLY COW. I never made up my mind on what to do so my date was John Lennon and I was Janis Joplin. Basically, just two hippies.
The fourth picture is a group of my Theta sisters participating in community service. We had the opportunity to volunteer at Friendship ISD gala. We seated guests at tables, checked people into the event, and helped with the auction. This event was so much fun! I was able to bond and get to know other Thetas.
The fifth picture is at a Kappa Alpha (KA) crawfish and 2v2 Basketball Day Party. KA was Theta's partner in homecoming my freshman year so we got to know the freshman pledge class very well. This was of the most fun days ever. I love these girls and getting to hang out with them at different events.
The last picture is at Beta Upsilon Chi's (BYX) semi-formal last April. It was super fun getting to go to semi-formal with BYX and Theta. It is always comforting to look around a room and see a sister's face.
